To lose weight during menopause might seem impossible, but I can assure you, it’s not! Read on to discover my tips and tricks for shedding those extra pounds.

Weight gain during menopause

Many women experience weight gain during menopause, but it is possible to lose weight with the right approach.

By making some lifestyle changes and incorporating healthy habits, you can achieve your weight loss goals and improve your overall health during this transitional time.

Understand the hormonal changes that occur during menopause

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years.

During this time, the body experiences a significant decrease in oestrogen production, which can lead to a variety of physical and emotional changes.

These hormonal changes can make it more difficult to lose weight but understanding them can help you develop a more effective weight loss plan.

While losing weight during menopause may require some additional effort, it is possible with the right approach. Here are some strategies that can help:

Focus on a healthy and balanced diet

Lose Weight During MenopauseOne of the most important things you can do to lose weight during menopause is to focus on a nutrient dense and balanced diet.

This means eating plenty of fibre-rich fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Avoid ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive amounts of alcohol.

It’s also important to pay attention to portion sizes and to eat slowly and mindfully, savouring each bite. Be aware of hunger and fullness cues to prevent overeating.

By making these changes to your diet, you can help support your weight loss goals and improve your overall health during menopause.

This is obviously a vague overview and there is no one size fits all approach, so please do reach out if you need more support with the nutrition side of things.

Incorporate resistance training into your exercise routine

I am a huge advocate of resistance training, regardless of a person’s age! One of the many great things about this type of training, is that it can help with weight loss during menopause.

As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass, which can slow down our metabolism and make it harder to lose weight.

Strength training can help build and maintain muscle mass, which can in turn boost your metabolism and help you burn more calories throughout the day.

Aim for at least two strength training sessions per week, focusing on exercises that target major muscle groups like the legs, arms, and core.

If the thought of pumping iron in the gym doesn’t appeal to you, don’t fear!

There are plenty of options when it comes to resistance training that don’t involve heavy dumbbells.

Examples include: Pilates, resistance band workouts and even yoga!

Prioritise sleep and stress management

This is a slightly trickier element to control, but sleep and stress management are also crucial components of weight loss during menopause.

I think most of us will notice an increase in appetite the day after a poor night’s sleep. This is because lack of sleep can disrupt hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism, which can lead to weight gain.

Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night and establish a relaxing bedtime routine to help improve sleep quality.

Additionally, managing stress through techniques like meditation, yoga, or therapy can help reduce cortisol levels, which can contribute to weight gain and make it harder to lose weight.

Prioritising sleep and stress management will work wonders for your overall health and weight loss goals during menopause.

Consider hormone replacement therapy (HRT) under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be an option for women experiencing severe menopausal symptoms, including weight gain.

HRT involves taking oestrogen and/or progesterone to replace the hormones that the body stops producing during menopause.

However, HRT is not without risks and should only be considered under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Women with a history of breast cancer, blood clots, or other health conditions may not be good candidates for HRT. It’s important to discuss the potential benefits and risks with a healthcare provider before starting HRT.

So, is it possible to lose weight during menopause? Yes!

And whilst it may seem like a daunting task, it is entirely possible with the right approach and lifestyle adjustments.

Remember, every individual is unique, and it’s important to listen to your body’s needs and make sustainable changes.

Please do reach out to me if you feel like you need further support. I have helped countless women achieve their weight loss goals during the menopause.
